Antiquarian Sir Richard Kaye commissioned Swiss artist Samuel Hieronymus Grimm to record 'everything curious' they saw during travelling tours across the country. Grimm produced thousands of drawings which are housed in the British Library. These remain at Bamburgh Castle.

A welfare school


From 1772 a free school for underprivileged North East children operated in the Castle. It ran for 120 years. Pupils included orphan boarders and the children of sailors drowned at sea.

Actress Lady Mary Tudor 1673 - 1726


The daughter of King Charles II and his mistress Mary Davies. She married Edward Radcliffe, the Second Earl of Derwentwater. Their son James fought alongside General Tom Forster for the Jacobites at the infamous Battle of Preston.

Anglo Saxon Well


Essential for providing a safe and reliable water source, the well is two-metres wide and was excavated through 44 metres of tough whinstone. Both Oswald and Aidan would have drunk from it during the 7th century.

Antwerp tapestries circa 1670


Gifted to Dr John Sharp by his wife Mary’s father, the tapestries came to Bamburgh in 1776. Woven in Antwerp they were designed by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, a Dutch painter and assistant of Rubens.

When the Third Lord Armstrong turned 21 in 1913, great celebrations ensued at Bamburgh and Cragside. Flags were flown and gifts were presented from the Estate. Mugs like this were given to all local children.

Bamburgh Castle's link to the abolishment of slavery


Brother to Dr John Sharp, Granville was directly involved in the abolition of slavery in Britain. His involvement began after he befriended a beaten slave in the care of his surgeon brother William.

Used by Lord and Lady Armstrong to pursue their interests in geography, astronomy and navigation. The terrestrial globe shows land and water bodies. The celestial globe shows constellations and stars.

Owned by Dorothy, niece of Lady Dorothy Crewe. Dorothy rescued her brother ‘General Tom’ from Newgate Gaol following the failed Northern Rebellion of 1715.

Dorothy engineered the daring rescue of her brother Tom, a leader in the Jacobite rebellion. See his painting above. He was incarcerated at Newgate Prison facing execution for treason. See Dorothy's dress and shoes in the Faire Chamber.

Fans and Patch Boxes


A collection of fans includes this painted scene showing a May Day gathering. Also displayed are ‘patch boxes’. Patches or beauty spots were worn in the 18th century to cover scars and pockmarks.

Footman’s Uniform


This footman’s uniform was worn by staff at Cragside, Lord Armstrong’s country home at Rothbury and the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.

Gothic pointed doorways leading to Muniment Tower and Garde-Robe


Opening to narrow Norman stairs, these lead to an original Muniment Tower where important documents were held. An upper room contains the Castle’s only remaining medieval Garde-Robe (toilet) which was suspended over rocks into a moat.

Hammer Beam Teak Roof


The hammer beam ceiling is the focus of Lord Armstrong’s recreation of the King’s Hall. Inspired by a roof at Windsor Castle, it is made of 300 tonnes of teak from Siam, held together by oak pins.

The 1546 deeds did not include the Castle in the sale. Following the invention of gunpowder, castles lost their defensive role. Expensive to keep and surplus to the Crown, James I gave Bamburgh Castle to its constable Claudius Forster.

After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry VIII sold land from the Augustinian Priory in Bamburgh to John Forster of Adderstone for £664. This was the foundation of what would become the Bamburgh Castle Estate today.

Lady Dorothy Crewe (1673 -1716)


The marriage between Dorothy Forster and Lord Nathaniel Crewe was a love match, despite a 40-year age difference. Dorothy died of shock on learning a warrant had been issued for the arrest of her nephew Thomas, a Jacobite sympathiser. Nathaniel formed a charity in her memory, safeguarding Bamburgh.

Mason’s Ironstone China Vase gifted by first Chinese Ambassador


The Armstrongs had many global business connections. This vase was gifted to the Armstrong family in 1896 by the first Chinese Ambassador to Britain, Li Hung Chang during a visit to Cragside, Armstrong’s country house.

Medieval Archways


These three archways run from the Great Kitchen to the King’s Hall. The middle was an enclosed passageway for servants bearing food. The small archways on either side led to butteries and store rooms.

Medieval Street Views


Look through the window to see the sunken road passing through the stone wall? It was Bamburgh’s main street called Spittalgate, Spittal meaning hospital. It led to a 13th century leper hospital where the red tiled houses stand today.

Nathaniel, Lord Crewe (1633 to 1721),
Bishop of Durham


Wealthy and well-connected, Nathaniel was also a compassionate man. He married his first love, Dorothy Forster, in 1700. She was joint heir to the Forster’s bankrupt estates including Bamburgh. Nathaniel purchased these, clearing her family’s debts.

These symbols inscribed into stonework by the northerly window identified the work of the mason or team who quarried or dressed the stone to calculate pay.

Original Norman Hearths, c. 1300s


Damaged during the 1464 siege, the original Norman kitchen is visible below the dado rail. Food was roasted in spits for the garrison on these hearths. Children turned these by hand.

Portrait of Henry VIII and the Dissolution of Monasteries


No Old Master but a junk shop find by the Second Lord Armstrong in 1932! When Henry ordered Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, Sir John Forster bought the Lands of Bamburgh’s Augustinian Priory, the foundation of the Armstrong Estate today.

Tenant and artist Frank Stanley Ogilvie complained he was tired of painting landscapes. The First Lord Armstrong offered to pose for a portrait, promising to deduct a month’s rent if satisfied. He remitted a year’s rent in delight!

The world’s first coastguard station was established at Bamburgh Castle in the 18th century. The Trustees introduced pioneering systems to save lives at sea. These instructions were printed to help aid shipwrecked sailors.

Queen Anne of Denmark


An astute cultural and political leader, Queen Anne of Denmark was enthusiastic about arts and architecture. She married James I in 1594 at the age of 14.

Elaborately decorated wedding chests like this were an important part of Italian marriage rituals. This chest was brought to Bamburgh by the 4th Lady Armstrong, it was so large the sea facing window was removed and the chest swung in by crane.

Sallet Combat Helmet


This is an original Sallet helmet. Dated to the exact age of the 1464 Siege, it could have been worn by both Lancastrian and Yorkist forces during the Wars of the Roses battle when the Castle fell under cannon fire.

Scullery sinks

Secret Norman room


This Victorian stairway leads to an intact Norman tower room. It survived the siege of 1464 in the Wars of the Roses, when much of the Castle was destroyed.

Sedan chair ambulance


In 1772 a charitable infirmary was housed in the Castle. This sedan chair served as an early ambulance for patients. It was donated by William Sharp - brother of Castle trustee Dr John Sharp - and surgeon to George III.

Shipwreck Chains part of the Castle's coastguard system


The beach beneath the Castle was a graveyard for ships due to storms and reefs. These chains were commissioned by Castle trustee Dr Sharp and loaned to the community to haul in shipwrecked vessels and salvage at low tide with teams of horses.

Shooting Gallery Corridor

Stone Friezes


This stone frieze reflects Lord Armstrong’s genius in ship design. He built war ships for navies around the world. It shows shipping across the centuries, from coracle to Victorian steam ship.

The elaborate stone ceiling was inspired by Christ Church College at Oxford. Lord Nathaniel Crewe was educated at Oxford’s Lincoln College and became a generous benefactor there. Lord Crewe scholarships continue there today.

Tapestry gifted by suffragette Norah Balls (1883 - 1980)


Bamburgh Castle resident Norah Balls was a high-profile suffragette who fought alongside Emmeline Pankhurst to secure the vote for women.

Reflecting the shared interests of Lord and Lady Armstrong there are volumes on natural history, engineering and science. It includes Electric Movement in Air and Water which Armstrong wrote following his electrical experiments.

The Bakery


The bakery, scullery and larder areas were added in the early 20th century. Housed in a medieval tower, storage areas were built into the castle’s walls to maintain even temperatures and windows installed for light and to release heat.

The Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh by Robert John Bertram Scott, 1904


Northumbrian ballad of a witch who tricks the King of Bamburgh into marriage, turning his daughter into a dragon. The spell is broken by a prince who transforms the Queen into a toad which is said to remain in the Castle.

The Rose Window


Created by The First Lord Armstrong, it pays tribute to the Castle’s connections over the centuries. Central is the Royal Coat of Arms of Henry VI, who lived in the Castle during the Wars of the Roses.

Victorian Air conditioning


This wooden vent is one of many air conditioning vents throughout the Castle designed by Lord Armstrong to circulate fresh air. His Victorian radiators alongside are still used to heat the Castle today.

Weaponry


A 14th century inventory lists war helmets, bolts for hurling, bows and arrows, crossbows and wax torches. Weapons were used to defend the castle against rebels and the Scots who besieged the castle during the Border Wars.

A welfare school


From 1772 a free school for underprivileged North East children operated in the Castle. It ran for 120 years. Pupils included orphan boarders and the children of sailors drowned at sea.

Actress Lady Mary Tudor 1673 - 1726


The daughter of King Charles II and his mistress Mary Davies. She married Edward Radcliffe, the Second Earl of Derwentwater. Their son James fought alongside General Tom Forster for the Jacobites at the infamous Battle of Preston.

Anglo Saxon Well


Essential for providing a safe and reliable water source, the well is two-metres wide and was excavated through 44 metres of tough whinstone. Both Oswald and Aidan would have drunk from it during the 7th century.

Antwerp tapestries circa 1670


Gifted to Dr John Sharp by his wife Mary’s father, the tapestries came to Bamburgh in 1776. Woven in Antwerp they were designed by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, a Dutch painter and assistant of Rubens.

Armstrong commemorative china


When the Third Lord Armstrong turned 21 in 1913, great celebrations ensued at Bamburgh and Cragside. Flags were flown and gifts were presented from the Estate. Mugs like this were given to all local children.

Bamburgh Castle by Thomas Miles Richardson Snr 1845


Showing the Castle prior to its 18th century restoration. The sea is pounded the Castle rock before the sand dune structure reformed in the 1800s. Steps lead to the original St Oswald’s Anglo Saxon entrance and Apothecary's House.

Bamburgh Castle's link to the abolishment of slavery


Brother to Dr John Sharp, Granville was directly involved in the abolition of slavery in Britain. His involvement began after he befriended a beaten slave in the care of his surgeon brother William.

Celestial and terrestrial globes made in 1860 by cartographer William Newton


Used by Lord and Lady Armstrong to pursue their interests in geography, astronomy and navigation. The terrestrial globe shows land and water bodies. The celestial globe shows constellations and stars.

Dorothy Forster Dress and Shoes


Owned by Dorothy, niece of Lady Dorothy Crewe. Dorothy rescued her brother ‘General Tom’ from Newgate Gaol following the failed Northern Rebellion of 1715.

Dorothy Forster, niece of Lady Dorothy Forster (1686 - 1767)


Dorothy engineered the daring rescue of her brother Tom, a leader in the Jacobite rebellion. See his painting above. He was incarcerated at Newgate Prison facing execution for treason. See Dorothy's dress and shoes in the Faire Chamber.

Fans and Patch Boxes


A collection of fans includes this painted scene showing a May Day gathering. Also displayed are ‘patch boxes’. Patches or beauty spots were worn in the 18th century to cover scars and pockmarks. Ornate fans and patch boxes.

Footman’s Uniform


This footman’s uniform was worn by staff at Cragside, Lord Armstrong’s country home at Rothbury and the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.

Gothic pointed doorways leading to Muniment Tower and Garde-Robe


Opening to narrow Norman stairs, these lead to an original Muniment Tower where important documents were held. An upper room contains the Castle’s only remaining medieval Garde-Robe (toilet) which was suspended over rocks into a moat.

Hammer Beam Teak Roof


The hammer beam ceiling is the focus of Lord Armstrong’s recreation of the King’s Hall. Inspired by a roof at Windsor Castle, it is made of 300 tonnes of teak from Siam, held together by oak pins.

Lady Dorothy Crewe (1673 -1716)


The marriage between Dorothy Forster and Lord Nathaniel Crewe was a love match, despite a 40-year age difference. Dorothy died of shock on learning a warrant had been issued for the arrest of her nephew Thomas, a Jacobite sympathiser. Nathaniel formed a charity in her memory, safeguarding Bamburgh.

Mason’s Ironstone China Vase gifted by first Chinese Ambassador


The Armstrongs had many global business connections. This vase was gifted to the Armstrong family in 1896 by the first Chinese Ambassador to Britain, Li Hung Chang during a visit to Cragside, Armstrong’s country house.

Medieval Archways


These three archways run from the Great Kitchen to the King’s Hall. The middle was an enclosed passageway for servants bearing food. The small archways on either side led to butteries and store rooms.

Medieval Street Views


Look through the window to see the sunken road passing through the stone wall? It was Bamburgh’s main street called Spittalgate, Spittal meaning hospital. It led to a 13th century leper hospital where the red tiled houses stand today.

Nathaniel, Lord Crewe
(1633 to 1721), Bishop of Durham


Wealthy and well-connected, Nathaniel was also a compassionate man. He married his first love, Dorothy Forster, in 1700. She was joint heir to the Forster’s bankrupt estates including Bamburgh. Nathaniel purchased these, clearing her family’s debts.

Norman Masons' Marks


These symbols inscribed into stonework by the northerly window identified the work of the mason or team who quarried or dressed the stone to calculate pay.

Original Norman Hearths, c. 1300s


Damaged during the 1464 siege, the original Norman kitchen is visible below the dado rail. Food was roasted in spits for the garrison on these hearths. Children turned these by hand.

Dr John Sharp’s drive to make the waters off the Castle safer is depicted. A ship can be seen floundering amid treacherous seas. The very telescope in the painting is on display beneath.

Portrait of Henry VIII and the Dissolution of Monasteries


No Old Master but a junk shop find by the Second Lord Armstrong in 1932! When Henry ordered Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, Sir John Forster bought the Lands of Bamburgh’s Augustinian Priory, the foundation of the Armstrong Estate today.

Portrait of James I, the last Royal owner of Bamburgh Castle. He gave the ruined Castle to Claudius Forster in 1610.

Portrait of Sir William George Armstrong by Frank Stanley Ogilvie


Tenant and artist Frank Stanley Ogilvie complained he was tired of painting landscapes. The First Lord Armstrong offered to pose for a portrait, promising to deduct a month’s rent if satisfied. He remitted a year’s rent in delight!

Posters produced by the Lord Crewe Trustees in the 1770s


The world’s first coastguard station was established at Bamburgh Castle in the 18th century. The Trustees introduced pioneering systems to save lives at sea. These instructions were printed to help aid shipwrecked sailors.

Queen Anne of Denmark


An astute cultural and political leader, Queen Anne of Denmark was enthusiastic about arts and architecture. She married James I in 1594 at the age of 14.

Renaissance Tuscan Marriage Chest


Elaborately decorated wedding chests like this were an important part of Italian marriage rituals. This chest was brought to Bamburgh by the 4th Lady Armstrong, it was so large the sea facing window was removed and the chest swung in by crane.

Sallet Combat Helmet


This is an original Sallet helmet. Dated to the exact age of the 1464 Siege, it could have been worn by both Lancastrian and Yorkist forces during the Wars of the Roses battle when the Castle fell under cannon fire.

Scullery sinks


These sinks are plug-less, so fish and meat could be cured in salt without pipework being corroded.

Secret Norman room


This Victorian stairway leads to an intact Norman tower room. It survived the siege of 1464 in the Wars of the Roses, when much of the Castle was destroyed.Original Norman room with vaulted ceiling.

Sedan ambulance chair


In 1772 a charitable infirmary was housed in the Castle. This sedan chair served as an early ambulance for patients. It was donated by William Sharp - brother of Castle trustee Dr John Sharp - and surgeon to George III.

Shipwreck Chains part of the Castle's coastguard system


The beach beneath the Castle was a graveyard for ships due to storms and reefs. These chains were commissioned by Castle trustee Dr Sharp and loaned to the community to haul in shipwrecked vessels and salvage at low tide with teams of horses.

Shooting Gallery Corridor


Used by Francis Watson-Armstrong as a boy growing up in the Castle for shooting practice! Originally a Victorian-built corridor to access all rooms in the Castle under the first Lord Armstrong’s plans for the Castle to be a Convalescent Home.

Painted after Lord Armstrong’s death, his butler Andrew Crozier sat for the figure element of the portrait. In his hands are the Castle’s restoration plans.

Stone Friezes


This stone frieze reflects Lord Armstrong’s genius in ship design. He built war ships for navies around the world. It shows shipping across the centuries, from coracle to Victorian steam ship.

Stonework inspired by Christ Church College


The elaborate stone ceiling was inspired by Christ Church College at Oxford. Lord Nathaniel Crewe was educated at Oxford’s Lincoln College and became a generous benefactor there. Lord Crewe scholarships continue there today.

Sailors used charts like this to navigate safely from one port to another. Peculiarities of coastal waters, approaches, port entrances with reefs, sandbanks or landmarks for orientation were shown.

The Deeds 1546


After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry VIII sold land from the Augustinian Priory in Bamburgh to John Forster of Adderstone for £664. This was the foundation of what would become the Bamburgh Castle Estate today.
