This sculpted angel holding a shield is a corbel, used to support the room’s elaborate wooden ceiling. Placed high up, the subject of the sculpture would have recalled angels in heaven and the shield would have been painted with a coat of arms, perhaps those of the abbey.

This sculpted angel holding a shield is a corbel, used to support the room’s elaborate wooden ceiling. Placed high up, the subject of the sculpture would have recalled angels in heaven and the shield would have been painted with a coat of arms, perhaps those of the abbey.
